After months of discussions, calls, commits and proofs of concept, sample.cat is finally out !

With this website, we celebrate the real public birth of a project we have been questioning since the terrorist attacks in Paris in 2015.

Through exchanges with people from many different horizons, we were able to formalize our ideas and to summarize it all in this place. We'll try to keep it up to date as the project goes on.

Application to PSES-HSF 2016

By the end of June and the beginning of July, the 2016 edition of Pas Sage En Seine will be held jointly with the HackerSpaces Festival in Choisy-le-Roi, France.

We decided to apply for a conference slot during the event. We deeply think this project is in the very scope of this hackers' gathering : we aim for a better understanding of social evolution through technology.

Please find hereinafter the project summary and description provided in the filled application :

Summary for schedule leaflet

For non-french readers :

As social networks are taking a more and more important spot in our societies, the analysis of reactions posted online paves the way for a better understanding of social dynamics.

The sample.cat project is a set of semi-automated tools to extract and analysis the hidden meaning from the continuous flow generated by our connected societies.

Description

Here again, the english translation :

Social networks offer today a way for everyone to publicly and spontaneously react to an incoming news item.

Having such a instantaneous access to states of mind on a population-scale allows for a in-depth analysis of social dynamics after a major event, as an example, we chose the 2015 Paris terrorist attacks.

Online communications are interesting to sociology and are actually subject of recent research projects (quota_atypique and others) ; we aim at setting up semi-automated analysis (quantitative & statistical, qualitative, classifications, etc.).

More over, the online presence of media entities (traditional medias & politicians) gives the possibility to study the causality between a public announcement and people's reactions. Beyond its technical aspect, this project questions the link between social networks and societal life with a civic dimension.
